Who is a Building Surveyor?

In Australia a Building Surveyor is a recognized Professional Technician with a broad understanding of the end implications of decisions taken by more specific professions and trades during the concept, the planning, the building and the realisation process.

What Building Service is a Building Surveying work?

The definition of Building Services is explained (as extracted) by the Building Services (Complaint Resolution and Administration) Regulations 2011 Regulation 4A:

  1. In this regulation — building surveying work means —
    1. the examination of plans and specifications for a building or incidental structure to assess the safety, accessibility and energy efficiency of a building or incidental structure if the building or incidental structure is built in accordance with the plans and specifications; and
    2. the examination of an existing building or incidental structure to assess the safety, accessibility and energy efficiency of the building or incidental structure.
  2. Building surveying work is prescribed for the purposes of the definition of building service in section 3 of the Act.
Which Building Works required a Permit?

The Building Act 2011 Section 3 (as extracted) explains the meaning of Building works:

  1. The construction, erection, assembly or placement of a building or an incidental structure; or
  2. The renovation, alteration, extension, improvement or repair of a building or an incidental structure; or
  3. The assembly, reassembly or securing of a relocated building or a relocated incidental structure; or
  4. the changing of ground levels of land for the purposes of work of a kind mentioned in paragraph (a), (b) or (c) to an extent that could adversely affect land beyond its boundaries; or
  5. Site work on any land for the purposes of, or required because of, work of a kind mentioned in —
    1. Paragraph (a), (b), (c) or (d); or
    2. Paragraph (a) or (b) of the definition of demolition work;

    Or

  6. Other prescribed work,

But does not include work of a kind prescribed for the purposes of this definition as not being building work.
